Load Shedding and Your Pool Pump: 3 Ways to Protect It
Updated 2026-08-12
Load shedding doesn't just cut your lights - it stops your pool pump, and a stopped pump is the single biggest trigger for a green pool. Here's what's actually happening during an outage and how to keep your pool safe through it.
Why an outage matters to your pool
Your pump does two jobs at once: it circulates the water past the filter, and it keeps chlorine (or another sanitiser) moving evenly through the pool instead of settling. When the power cuts, both stop. A single stage's outage on its own is rarely a problem - as our green pool recovery guide explains, algae takes hold when a maintenance gap runs a week or more, not a few hours. The real risk is stacked outages: several outages a day, every day, for an extended stretch, which adds up to the same effect as the pump being off for days at a time even though no single cut was long.
What to check on your system
- Does your pump timer auto-resume after a power cut? Most modern digital pool timers pick up where they left off once power returns, but some older mechanical timers lose their programmed schedule every time they lose power and need to be reset manually. Check yours - if it's the older type, an extended load shedding run can leave your pump silently not running at all, even once power is back.
- Is your daily run-time realistic for how much power you're actually getting? If your area is losing several hours a day to load shedding, the pump may no longer be getting its full programmed cycle even if the timer itself is fine. Consider adjusting the schedule to run during your area's more reliable power windows rather than a fixed clock time.
- Do you have any backup power on the property? If you already run an inverter or generator for the house, ask an electrician whether the pool pump circuit can be added - even a lower-power circulation-only pump running through outages is cheaper than a full green-pool recovery afterwards. A variable-speed pump sized correctly for your pool (see our pump sizing guide) draws much less power than a fixed-speed pump of similar output, which makes it easier to keep running on limited backup capacity.
During an extended or unusually bad stretch
If your area is on an extended high-stage schedule for several days running, keep an eye on the water rather than assuming the normal routine covers it: check the pool visually every day or two, and if it starts to look cloudy or you can smell a change in the chemical balance, treat it immediately rather than waiting for your next scheduled service - catching it in the first day or two is far cheaper than a full recovery. See our DIY vs professional comparison if you're deciding whether to handle a top-up yourself or call in help.
If it's already gone green
A pump that stopped running for an extended stretch during heavy load shedding is one of the most common causes of a green pool call-out. If yours has already turned, our green pool recovery guide covers what a professional recovery involves, how long it takes, and what it costs (commonly R600-R1,900 per visit). Compare pool maintenance companies by city to get it sorted, and see our 6-point checklist before you sign with anyone for a recovery job.
Power isn't the only infrastructure squeeze pool owners deal with - many municipalities also restrict how you can top up or refill a pool during a water shortage. See our water restrictions guide if you're not sure what's currently allowed where you live.
